About Downtown Bloomington Gallery Walk

About Gallery Walk

Stroll the Downtown Bloomington Gallery Walk

Looking for a different kind of Date Night or night out with friends? New to Bloomington and don’t know what to do? Stroll the Downtown Gallery Walk any time of the year! Eleven downtown galleries—conveniently located within walking distance of one another—invite you to discover a wealth of artwork on a self-guided tour any time of the year and also during six festive Friday night gallery walk receptions. Those nights feature special events and receptions to highlight new exhibits by artists who range from local to international.

Member galleries offer atmospheres ranging from sophisticated to funky and intimate to spacious. Some galleries focus on emerging artists while others showcase well-known and acclaimed artists. Many artists are local but others are regional, national or international.

Downtown Bloomington is home to galleries that offer a variety of art forms, from jewelry and pottery to sculpture and fiber art. Other galleries specialize in one medium, such as fine-art photography or paintings. The one thing that all eleven galleries have in common is a commitment to showcasing compelling art.

Whatever your taste in fine art and craft, you’re sure to find something you love during Downtown Gallery Walk—and you’ll have fun while you’re doing it!

Gallery Walk History

The present Gallery Walk started in 2002 when The Gallery, John Waldron Arts Center, By Hand and Fossil Rain galleries all held holiday open houses on the same first Friday. With an exceptional turnout of patrons going from gallery to gallery, the galleries discussed the idea of coordinating their openings so that they would always be on the same Friday. Mary Hambly, the John Waldron Arts Center [JWAC] gallery director, suggested that The Gallery, John Waldron Arts Center, By Hand and Fossil Rain galleries get together to discuss the idea further and invited other galleries in town to do the same.  The following year they made their own brochure and the gallery walks gradually progressed from there.  Four years ago they separated from the Bloomington Area Arts Council [BAAC] and became the Gallery Walk Group with their own chairperson, treasurer and bank account.
