About the Artist:
Neo-Expressionist oil painter Patricia Cole grew up outside Chicago in northern Indiana and received a BFA in painting from Indiana University under Robert Barnes and Barry Gealt. Cole went on to receive an MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art, studying with Gretna Campbell and was graduate assistant to Campbell in painting. At MICA Cole taught drawing and served as interim director of the Decker Gallery.
“Cole’s work deals with issues of dislocation and the redeeming power of nature, love and relationship,” according to her Ivy Tech website biography.
After a year of travel and study in Europe with her young son, Cole established a studio in Bloomington, Indiana, which continues to be home. For more than a decade, Cole has taught for Ivy Tech Community College, teaching drawing or painting, and is currently teaching Online Art History. Patricia has received awards and residencies including Visiting Artist at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa; L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Aix en Provence, France; and Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. Cole is the recipient of the Andrew Carnegie Prize for Painting at the National Academy of Design, 2000, Individual Artist Grant, and Artist’s Development Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission.
Patricia has exhibited widely in group and solo shows: Grunwald Gallery, Indiana University; University of Johannesburg, South Africa; Indianapolis Museum of Art; Baltimore Museum of
Art; Art on Paper 1 - 7, Toyota Municipal Art Museum, Japan; Indiana State Museum; Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio; I. Fell Gallery, Bloomington, IN; Blue Mountain Invitational, New York, and others.
Cole’s influences are numerous, but include Picasso, Rembrandt, Joan Brown, Anselm Kiefer.
