"Sanguine" By Elizabeth Elich
Sanguine examines the tactility of everyday experiences as a way of giving a fresh perspective. Focusing primarily on reproductive and women’s rights, Elich uses real menstrual blood and textiles to convey a common experience while not inserting a specific narrative. This way viewers can reflect on their own experience while confronting their emotions and reactions associated with that experience. Elich's desire is to show work that helps in dismantling shame around menstruation and embolden people to share, speak up and be empowered by these experiences. Sanguine is made up of collagraph prints on paper and woven tapestries, all depicting menstrual blood stains.
Elizabeth Elich is a printmaker, fiber artist and educator. She is from Saskatchewan, Canada but moved to Bloomington, IN in 2019. Elich received her MFA in Printmaking in 2022 and has been an adjunct instructor at the Eskenazi School and Ivy Tech Community College since graduating. Her work is focused on reproductive and women’s rights experiences and conveying them through textured surfaces.
